http://www.amazon.com/Canon-BG-E4-Batter... Okay, I'll play. This is MY ultimate package. I do not do studio work, so there is no elaborate lighting set-up. I want something I can carry or pack easily. There are some absolutely gorgeous long Nikon lenses, but even one of them would blow your budget. They are the kind of lens we only dream about. Like owning a Ferrari.
How about this... I own a Nikon D200 and love it. There are certainly better cameras out there, but none that I'd want to lug around. If I had experience with the Canon 5D, maybe I'd build a kit around that, but I really don't know the ins and outs of the Canon line.

Lenses:
Nikon Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens - $1,200 - This is just a superb zoom lens for close quarters, such as indoor shooting or "normal" outdoor photography.
Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX VR II Autofocus Lens - $750 - Good all-purpose walk-around lens for a day of touring when you don't want to mess with swapping lenses. Not "the ultimate best," but I have never had any distortion that I couldn't fix in Photoshop Elements to my satisfaction.
If you can give up the 55-70 range, you might prefer this lens instead of the 18-200 lens. It is better optically, but really big.

Nikon Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens - $920 - VERY well reviewed lens. I don't own it, but I can see how I'd like to.
Nikon Telephoto AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR (Vibration Reduction) Autofocus Lens - $830 - Great macro lens that would also serve as a moderate telephoto prime lens.
Nikon Wide Angle AF Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D Autofocus Lens - $320 - if you want to scale down to the basics with a traditional angle of view prime lens. (Digital has that 1.5 lens factor.)

Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 - $100 - This probably does at least 90% of what CS2 does that you would really need.
Getting Elements might allow for an aftermarket warranty on many items, which could be a good idea.
