Can you use a Canon NB-3L battery in a newer camera that takes a NB-5L? I have a SD550, am getting an SD700 IS

According to several sites that sell them, the NB 5L is a replacement for the NB 3L. They may not be up-word compatible though. The 5L may have higher amp/hr rate so the 3L may not give as good usage before needing re-charged.
