Better pictures, Digital camera or something like a Canon Rebel 35mm?

If you get a 10-12 MP digital SLR, you would be hard pressed to see the difference from film. If you are just learning photography, you will appreciate the fact that digital is FREE once you own the equipment, so you can shoot a thousand pictures to learn one concept, if necessary, and it won't cost you a penny in film costs or processing fees.

I invite you to look at some of my pictures on Flickr to judge for yourself. Of course, you are not looking at prints, but I attest that the quality of the prints will match what you see on your monitor.

you might still find some people who swear by film, but digital is the way to go, in my opinion.

It really depends on what you are taking pictures of. Nowadays with computers, it is so much easier to have a digital camera -- you can download your pictures and send via email and NEVER go in to have any printed! Plus, you don't have to have the film developed and then the prints printed! You can take your compact flash card in and only print up what you want. It's much cheaper to get prints in this fashion.
