Is the E18 error a common problem for all Canon digital cameras? If not, which cameras does it affect?

I'm interested in purchasing the PowerShot S3 IS and am now concerned that I will have this error like I already do with the PowerShot A80.

I just got an e18 error for the second time on a Canon S500. This is a very common error and the only way to fix it is to send it into Canon for repair. Customer Support at Canon will tell you "You can have the camera repaired for $160.00 or we can send you a refurbished model for $190.00." Beware that the refurbished model only has a 6 month warranty and mine just died in the 7th month and Canon will only fix it for the $160 charge. I say take your chances on another brand.
