Canon Digital Rebel XT: Actual picture is underexposed, whereas the LCD screen on camera shows a brigher pictu

When I see pictures taken on Canon Digital Rebel XT (EOS 350D), the pictures are less bright than what is displayed on the LCD screen of the camera? Why is this. I want to be able to check the pictures and either reshoot or move on. This is a bit misleading. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'd say bring it into your local Canon dealer and explain the problem, maybe a setting adjustment. I have an XTi and never experienced this sort of issue nor any other for that matter.

Sounds like the brightness setting on the LCD may be too high. On my digital SLR I set the brightness basically as low as it can go. It should be in your Menu settings on your camera.

The only thing the LCD should be used for and the only thing it's good for is checking composition. It's not going to show you the photo you will actually get and it was never meant to.

I'm working pro. Here's how I do it and everyone I know does, regardless of the camera.

1. Check the histogram first. You can set your camera so that it is the first display you get. This will immediately give you a handle on your exposure.

2. Check the overall composition. You'll get this display on the XTi by zooming the display once. If it's not what you want and you don't see crop potential, reshoot.

3. Check detailed areas of the image if you need to. People tend to do strange things when you're taking pictures, like close their eyes exactly at the time of exposure. There could be any number of things you may want to check by zooming in. This is the stage to do it at.

Try doing it that way. It's fast and efficient.

I have the original Rebel and the XTi and they both have the same characteristic. Sure I can adjust the LCD brightness but then I would have problem reviewing my picture during bright light condition so I didn't change it.

At first, I was a little bit tricked by this just as what happened to you - but then I got used to it, especially after I learned how to read the histogram which gives me a great deal of help when reviewing my picture. You can read the histogram by pressing the Info/Disp button when you're reviewing your picture. It's pretty easy, the left bar is the dark area, the right bar is the bright area. Underexposed picture have more spikes on the left while overexposed picture have more spike on the right.
