Which is the better camera? The Digital Rebel XT or the D40?

I've been a real traditionalist and stuck to my canon 35 mm camera for some time now and I finally realized it's time I gave in to modernizing and bought a digital camera. I've narrowed down my choices between the Canon Digital Rebel XT and the Nikon D40, but I cannot decide which is better. Can anyone help me?

The XT is a better camera. The closest Nikon camera in terms of performance and price is the D70s The Nikon D70s and the Canon Rebel XT were discontinued at about the same time, too.
As an added bonus, by sticking with a Canon body you can continue to use any Canon auto-focus lenses you might have. These lenses will appear to be magnified by 1.6 however. (So a 50mm lens effectively becomes 80mm on the Rebel XT, a 70-200mm zoom becomes 112-320mm, etc.)

I agree with RSFD. The Canon specs out better and if you have lenses, this makes the decision easy.

If you have NO additional lenses, maybe it's time to jump to the Nikon camp. It still bothers me that the Canon does not have a spot meter, which the Nikon does. If you are accustomed to taking spot readings in the 35 mm camera, you might prefer to get a camera that allows you to continue doing this.

While you're at it, compare the D40 to the D50 and see which you prefer. The D50 costs only a bit more and it offers more versatility.

But........... If you have a few Canon lenses, check the compatibility of features and consider the XT ... or XTi.
