Special wire to hook onto computer for every digital camera?

Is there a special wire for every digital camera to hook onto the computer and download pictures or can you go to Fry's and like Best Buy and stuff and get one?

Like, I have this Canon digital camera. I shipped it to Florida b/c I'm moving there in a few weeks. Is there a same wire I can buy any where else?

Or do I have to wait until I move to download pics?

I CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG

I have 3 different Canon digitals, and they all use the same specialized USB cable to connect to a computer. One end is a standard USB, the other is a smaller plug that fits in the camera. I'm not sure if the smaller plug is standard, or is custom to Canon.

However, you shouldn't need a cable to connect the camera to your computer. You can pull out the memory card, and stick it in a card reader, and copy the pictures off it just like it was another drive attached to the computer. It's easier, and a lot faster than hooking the camera up directly.

If it is a recently made camera, a standard USB cable, available everywhere, should work. Older digital cameras did not have USB connectivity, and used proprietary cables, so you'd have to contact the manufacturer for one.

The USB cable that hooks onto Canon cameras are supposedly all the same, however, different makes use different ends (the camera end) of the cable, so be sure you have the correct one. The end that plugs into the computer is usually identical in all makes.

All the answers so far are great answers. I just want to add another option for you.

You can also buy a memory card reader that'll hook to your computer, or any computer, via a USB cable. Unlike your camera, you won't need to have the canon software installed on the computer. When you insert your memory card into the reader, your computer will just recognize it as a removeable hard drive. You can then click and drag all your photos into any folder that you create on your computer.

If I were you, I'd go this route actually, since it's a universal thing. Most card readers can read many, many different types of cards (for future compatibility) and in a lot of cases, can be faster to transfer pics than somewhat older cameras.

Plus, if you're like me, or ever become someone like me, you'll have many different digital cameras and they have different types of memory cards. It's just easier to just insert the memory card into the reader than to remove and insert the appropriate USB cable for each camera. Not only that, but all the different software eats up valuable resources on the computer making it slower.

I'm willing to bet that you can find some card readers online or at computer specialty stores for $10.

Just thought I'd offer an alternative to the USB cable hooked up the the camera.
