Why does my digital camera say I have 5,000 photos?

I have an A550 Canon Digital Camera. I don't know if it's the camera itself or the memory cards (must be camera though cuz both memory cards do the same thing). But when I first got my camera and put the memory card in, it said I have 504 photos. Then a few days later I turned it on again (same memory card) and it said I have over 5,000 photos.

As for my second memory card it at first said I had only 8. Then another day it said 54. And then it said 62.

Now for both memory cards I didn't delete or add photos or anything (they were always a clear memory card, nothing on it). It just keeps randomly changing the numbers. Why does it do this? I'm glad it says I have 5,000 photos, but that sounds like a hell of a lot lol. Any ideas why it does this?

did you format the cards ?
the manual tells you to format any new card..

cause u have 5,000 pictures 2 take duh!!!!!!!
