Should I upgrade my Canon Powershot SD400 digital camera for SD600?

I recently dropped and broke my SD400 and sent it in to Canon for repairs. The estimated cost is $115. However, Canon has also offered me a deal to buy a refurbished Powershot SD600 for $125. Is the SD600 that much better than the SD400? Is a refurbished camera worth it?

At first, I was going to say that you should get the SD1000 instead, but now that I read the conditions in your circumstance, I'd certainly go for the SD600. Look at it this way - it's at least $10-worth more camera than your SD400 and the SD600 will have a factory warranty for the whole camera, won't it? You repaired SD400 won't. The warranty alone is worth ten bucks, even if it is only for 90 days.

I know that the SD1000 has a whole new processor (Digic III) and the SD600 has the "older" Digic II processor. I am GUESSING that the SD400 has an older processor than Digic II. The SD600 offers ISO 800 as the highest speed. It's probably not a "great" 800, but at least it's there if you need it.

Thanks. Enjoy your new camera! Report It

I would buy a new one rather than repair the old one. Yeah you might consider buying a refurbished model. It looks cheap enough to be worth it.

sounds good to get the upgraded refurbished one then paying to repair your old one. and the only difference i can think of between the 400 and 600 is megapixels and if youre only printing 4x6 pictures then it really makes no difference because the features are the same.

Go with the SD600. That's a great price.

Even though I would prefer one of Canon's latest SD models, I also think that for an extra $10, you may as well get the SD600 (which was a very popular model in it's time).
I'm sure you should still get some sort of guarantee, even if it is refurbished.

Both cameras are almost the same, having very similar features.
They have the same processor (Digic II), and use the same battery (so you could use your battery as a spare).
The only real difference, from what I can see, is the SD600 has an extra MP and a much better LCD screen (2.5" 173,000 pixels versus 2.0" 115,000 pixels).
It also has a fast frame movie mode (60fps) which is good for fast moving objects (even though its only in 320x240).

So, if you don't want to splurge on a brand new model...then I think the SD600 (which is slightly better than yours) would be worth it.

good luck...
