Do you think it might be financially beneficial if I purchased a "backup" digital camera from ebay to rent to college students for the semester?
If so, how much should I charge them? Per month or per semester?
I can buy a Rebel XT for anout $400 new on ebay.
I have just had people ask to borrow my digital (something I don't do.) I thought if i had a camera specifically meant to be loaned out I could profit as well as help out a few struggling students. I would of course have them sign a contract regarding damage to the camera (but mine is under warranty so if they break it no big deal-I have coverage.)
As to parties etc-I was planning on only lending it to students in the photography program. 1) what happens if they don't return it? So, you'd need security deposit.
2) what happens if they break it?
If you want to charge them, typically you'll want a sliding scale, like a charge for a day, for a weekend (think parties), and then per week. You'd want them to pay weekly, otherwise, if you charge them by semester, they'd simply just buy their own used camera. Offhand, I'd say $40 to 50 per week. $15/day, and $20 for a weekend/two days. If you're going to do it by semester...I wouldn't charge more than the cost of a used camera! |
