What is your opinion on Canon digital cameras?

I bought a Canon digital camera 4 years ago and it broke down 1 month ago. to repair it will cost me $200. is it normal?

Canon is a good company, but nothing lasts forever, you have to realize it. If you cherish your camera you can repair it but better get another one, I would advise another Canon as you already have the software and the gadget for it.

Canon is, by far, the best camera company. 4 years for a digital camera is not bad. For a little over $200, you can upgrade to a Canon SD600 which I'm sure will be a great deal better than your S300 (or whichever camera you have).

Canon makes great cameras which are usually class-leading. For a four year old camera, it's normal that it broke down. As previously stated, it would be a better idea to purchase a new camera than to fix your current one.

Canon is the Toyota of the camera industry. They're not the leader on features or capabilities, but they have excellent image quality. That's not to say that every Canon is better than every other camera, as canon makes cameras in all price ranges. And- you tend to pay a bit more for a Canon than you would for a Fuji or Panasonic- which are also oustanding digital cameras.

The truth of the matter is that digicams are complicated devices, have moving parts, and take a lot of abuse. So- they break. They're impossible to fix without sending them to the authorized service center so, you can't very well shop around for a better price to repair it.

For less than $200, you could get a truly outstanding Fuji F20. Might as well toss the old Canon and enjoy shopping for a new camera.

4 years is pretty decent for a digital camera, if you take really good care of your camera itll last 6 or so years. I dont think its worth the $200 when you can get a newer camera for about $250 and it will be a lot better than your old one. Its a good excuse for you to get a new camera.

Canon camera do take nice pictures.
I find that the SLR digital Canon's tend to be a little on the heavy side for lugging around.
To upgrade to a lighter and more option camera will of course cost more.
Look for the features you really want and test drive a few at a camera counter somewhere. Make a list of options and price range and beat the daylights out of some salepeople till you find what you want. You may just decide to stay with Canon, after all the price and picture qualitiy are right up there.

Canon has posted on their web site that they have identified a problem with the sensors that they used in several models of their point and shoot digital cameras. If your camera is one of these models and if the problem is with the sensor they will repair it free of charge. We have experienced a problem with the sensor on my wife's and my son's digital canon cameras - different models, but with sensors from the same manufacturer. We are in the process of having one repaired and getting a refund and possible replacement for the other which Canon had repaired but which developed the same problem again one year later.

On the other hand, I have a Canon 10D digital SLR. I have had no problems with it and have taken many 1000's of pictures.

I shoot with Canon and really like their cameras! $200.00 sounds like a reasonable amount for a camera repair.

Canon is a great brand and 4 years for a digital camera is a very good life.
But all good things come to an end...so instead of getting it fixed, which would be a complete waste of money (because the camera is outdated), it would be better to buy a new one.
The newer cameras of today have more megapixels, better photo quality, much faster camera performance, better movie quality and features.

If you want an ultra compact point & shoot, look at one of the SD models (SD600 or the nicer, SD700 IS), or if you prefer to have full manual controls included, then the A640 would be the one to get.
