I'm thinking about buying the Canon A640 Digital Camera... What do you think of this camera?

good choice
go for it

It is a great little camera. It has one of the largest sensors found in compact digital cameras and has a nice high pixel count too (10.1mp).

Usually I would suggest you look for one with image stabilization, but since this camera has a viewfinder, you may not need that.

The Canon PowerShot A640 is a very good camera. 4X optical zoom, 10 megapixels, only one second delay between shots. Has manual controls, and very good on AA rechargeable batteries.

This is a great camera if you need a compact point and shoot camera. It has great reliability and battery life. It will last you a long time as you get into more advanced photography because it offers automatic and a much of manuel controls.
I have a sony cybershot dsc-w55 camera which would be comparible to the a640. You can get it for less than 200 dollars, and if has a much slimmer and more pocketable design-- So if I were you, I'd check it out.

It's hard to go wrong with the Canon "A" series cameras. Do you "need" 10 megapixels? If you are printing LARGE prints, then the 10 megapixels is just what the doctor ordered. Running 10 megapixels eats up your memory card quicker, and your hard drive & disks. With technology being so good, 10 megapixels will not give you a better picture to look at, only more resolution to print bigger pictures.

I own the Powershot A710 IS. I can take pictures at 7, 5, 3 and 2 megapixels. To "look" at them on the screen & on the disks I save them too, I can't "see" any quality difference. But when I know I may print something, I always use the 7.1 megapixel settings. I also very much suggest image stabilization. Yes, my camera does have a view finder but.....it's very tight & narrow. Besides, the view finder is not as accurate as the LCD screen.

The image stabilizer gives you sparkling clear pictures whereas non-stabilized cameras have a tendency to put out pictures that don't always focus as well as you would like. Before you buy, read customer reviews as much as you can. Good luck & enjoy your camera when you get it. Remember, that camera is for your fun & relaxation. It's not about keeping up with the Jones's.

good very good
