Dear friends,I wanna buy a digital camera(canon) to $ 400 but I don't know which model.please advise me.Try the Canon S3 IS Powershot. It has alot of manual functions similar to a DSLR, has great zoom (12x optical), and image stabilization.
Buy the camera at butterflyphoto.com... they have great deals are a quite a bit less than everyone else. I have bought 3 cameras from them; They are reputable and trustworthy.
Buy your memory products (ie batteries, memory card) from newegg.com. They will run better deals than butteflyphoto will. At $400 or less you are going to find point and shoot cameras available, not DSLR's. Look for the one with the most optical zoom (3x, 4x, 10x, etc), highest pixel count (7-10 megapixels), a large LCD and one that is small enough to put in your pocket. I agree with the person that said the Canon S3IS was a good choice. I just bought the S2IS for under $300 a couple mopnths ago. The 2 are essentially the same, the S3IS is a newer model and the biggest difference is the S3 is a 6 megapixel, the S2 is a 5 mp. (I don't care however, I won't be making prints big enough to make a difference. You would have to make prints bigger than 8x10.) I love it and there is no better choice for the money, hands down. here's a link on ebay where you can read reviews of them by ebay members Since you set the budget at $400, you can go (almost) to the top of the line in Canon point and shoot cameras. There are two styles to choose from - the A-series and the SD-series.
I just bought an SD900 for $350 from B&H Photo. This camera was introduced about $100 higher than that abuot 6 months ago. It is a really compact and sleek design, but I chose it because it has the larger sensor and (hopefully) the better image quality that goes with that in a really automatic camera. I have DSLR's to use when I want, but I want this camera so I can have one in my pocket pretty much all the time.
My son has an A630, which is a bit bigger and offers more user control. It has been a top rated camera for months now. Your budget allows for you to get the 10 megapixel A640, so go for it. Overall, it is probably a better camera than the SD900 that I bought, but my purpose was different than his. Mine will disappear into a shirt pocket and his will show a bulge even in a jacket pocket.
Check out this comparison page. Click on "In-depth review" and "Read Owner Opinions" for each camera. Be sure to note that the reviews are many pages long so you don't stop after page one. Check the sample images, also. You can enlarge these to full size images if you click on the link below the picture. You will have to then put your cursor in the white space to the right of the picture and click once. After that, you can pass your cursor over the image and it will turn into a magnifier. Click it as a magnifier once and the image will go to full size and you can really examine the detail or look for artifacts like fringing or noise.

So, I'd say that your choice comes down to compact size and style (SD) vs. full features and control (A). Choose your priorities and go for it.
With either camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III. you can check www.dpreview.com and find list of canon cameras and its picture quality comared to others and can decide on your own |
