What camera is better? Canon 40D, Nikon D60(80)?

I'm looking to buy a digitalSLR and wanted to get peoples opinion on which of these cameras is better. I'm debating between a Canon or a Nikon. But someone tolde me that the Nikon focus suck so I'm very confused on what to choose. If I do get a Nikon then I have 2 options to choose from. Please check out me links and details and let what you think.

The Canon 40D is the best camera in your list but comparing those three models against each other is hardly fair. Also, Nikon's auto-focus system is superb - as is Canon's. Whoever told you otherwise was smoking crack.

The Canon 40D is a semi-pro camera that competes with the semi-pro Nikon D300 (more expensive but better) or with the Nikon D200 (recently discontinued and similarly priced).

The Nikon D60 is an entry level camera. The Nikon D80 is for advanced amateurs. The corresponding Canon model would be the Canon XTi or the - so new it's not even available yet - Canon XSi.

As for which camera is best for you, first consider your requirements.
* Do you need a bullet-proof metal camera that can do 5+ frames per second? If so, pay extra for the semi-pro Canon 40D or Nikon D300/ D200. Otherwise, get the entry-level Canon XSi/ XTi or Nikon D60/ D80.
* After you decide on semi-pro vs. entry level, go to a camera store and play around with those cameras. The various Canon and Nikon models have the exact same image quality (image quality is mostly determined by the quality of the lens anyway) and 95% of the same features. In the end it's usually a matter of which camera feels best in your hands.

Oh, and about those Costco options... they have good prices but with the Canon 40D I'd personally prefer a lens that had some wide angle coverage, like the Canon 17-85mm. With the Nikon cameras, the 18-55mm and the 18-135mm kit lenses are both perfectly fine to start out with.

There are so many options that making the 'right' choice can become very confusing. Don't sweat it though. There is no such thing as a bad Canon/ Nikon camera or lens. Whatever you select, you'll get good value for money.

(I personally use a Nikon D200)

"But someone told me that the Nikon focus suck " more than likely it's a Canon user that told you that.

Too answer your question, personally I would get the D80.

last one.

To compare apples to apples, you need to compare the Canon 40D and Nikon D300 ... they are the latest entries.
