Which camera is better Canon Rebel or Nikon D40?

-Beginner dslr user
- I want one where I can use numerous lenses
-Affordable

I'd recommend going to your local camera store, or Best Buy if you don't know of one, and hold the two cameras. Ask the store if they'll let you hold the camera for a while, maybe walk it around the store and take some pictures with them. Some of the larger electronics stores may give you an issue about that, but I can't think of any reason why a camera store would have a problem with you truly getting the feel for the camera. One will probably feel more natural to you while the other will feel okay, but not quite right. Go with the one you like after an hour of really using the camera. To be perfectly honest, you won't go wrong with either, and if you're serious about getting into photography, even as a hobby, in a few years you'll find that the least of your investment was the camera itself. You just really want to get something that feels right -- you'll be spending a lot of time with it over the next couple of years.

Megapixels aren't a huge issue or anything. As for the LCD, well, you should be spending time looking out that viewfinder, not at your LCD. As both have a histogram to check your exposure, I really don't worry much about LCD size. You may want to share your pictures that you just took via your LCD, that may merit a larger LCD and thus a D40. I liked Canon because of their "L" and "DO" lenses, and that I could use all Nikon lenses (without autofocus ability) with a simple converter.

Despite what you'll hear from many people on the internet, there's really no right answer to the Nikon vs Canon argument. Some like Nikon, some like Canon, just as some like Coke and some like Pepsi. Either the Rebel, Rebel XT, Rebel XTi, D40, or D40x would be what you're looking for from these two manufacturers. Good luck and have fun with your new hobby!

Which Rebel?

The XSI, The XTI, The XT?

i can assume you mean the rebel xt, and if that's what you mean, you shouldn't get it, look at the screen, it's so small and pathetic, and nikon's d40 has much more of a larger screen, and you can see much more, you loose two megapixels, but that doesn't matter that much. However, the canon can shoot at a higher speed of point 5 than a second more, but that's not worth getting over the nikon d40, you should get the nikon d40, the features can't be over looked. you should get the nikon d40, forget canon :)

Nikon can use all but a hand full of lenses made since 1959 (on cameras other than the D40 .. the D40 has 29 AF-S lenses it can use)
Canon can only use Canon lenses made since 1987

D40 with AF-S 18-55 mm ED lens, under $470 on Amazon.
Canon XT with 18-55 mm USM II lens, around $490 used on craiglist

I would definitely recommend going with the Nikon D40. If you get the D40 from Amazon, it is only $450, with a 18-55mm lens (an excellent lens), and because it is so cheap, it would give you some extra cash to buy lenses, flashes, etc.

The D40 is exactly like the D60, except less pixels, which wouldnt matter unless you are a professional and are making HUGE prints.

The D40 is a great camera to start with. Go for it!

Go to a camera store, such as Best Buy or Henerys. Both of those stores will let you handle the cameras, and test them out. Note: Henery's is much more knowledgeable about cameras, go there if you have lots of questions.

feel free to send me a message.
