I am plannning to buy a digital camera but am confused between Sony and Canon. Please suggest which is best.?

cameras should be bought ... based on its resolution... that is specified in pixels...
say 2 pixels... 3 pixels... 5 pixels...
5 pixel cameras are best...
and its optical zoom... say 12x... 20x
the more the pixels and zoom... the better would be the results...
Sony and Canon both are good...

Resolution... 3 MPixels to 5 MPixels...

Sony Products are Really Best In Quality .

BUT WAIT A MOMENT !

Sony Product after a year require very much maintenance &repair and the parts are expensive too.

I am using Cannon Camera since 1990 which is digital.

It never happened that i go to the supplier/dealer for making a repair or asking the some function is not working.

I WILL RECOMMEND "CANNON" BRAND as best in
Imaging & Printing also.

i asked the same thing recently. Everyone was unanimous(sp?) in telling me to purchase a canon(including the sales clerk). So i bought a 250$ canon. I really like it and it has tons of options but for 250$ i think i coulda got something nicer.Its a great camera but you have to program it differently for all different situations. I prefer the ones that auto adapt..hope that helped

Depends on which one specifically; if you have 2 or more specific model numbers maybe we can compare them head-to-head. In the SLR world (the big ones that professionals use, Canon and Nikon are both tied at the top... But under usual circumstances I'd avoid Sony since I actually encounter more reliability issues. That's just me though.

I work in the camera dept at best buy. Canon sells the most. Also with sony you have to stick with their memory which is always more expensive. I have a canon and i love it. Sony cameras r great for low light photos but canon is just great overall.

All technicalities are fine to compare, but Canon is known for great quality cameras, while Sony is not bad but their specialisation is definitely not a camera manufacturing. My advise is to go for specialist " CANON".

Don't think it really matters, both are reputable brands. However I have a Sony since I'm used to them.

After reading the already posted answers, the first thing I have to say is that MEGAPIXELS ARE NOT IMPORTANT. These cameras with 12 MP capabilities are just marketing gimmicks - often, the actual quality of photos is opposite from the megapixel count due to technological reasons... Digital cameras use "processors" known as "sensors" to create their digital images. The more megapixels there are, the more photographic data is being squished into a tiny sensor, causing "noise", also known as the grainyness in digital photographs. If two cameras both have identically sized sensors, but one uses 6 MP and one uses 12 MP, the 6 MP camera will almost definitely have superior image quality. The number of megapixels in a low end camera is more than adequate unless you plan on creating huge posters from your photos, so the MP count should be the last thing you worry about.

Now onto Sony vs. Canon...

I have had cameras from both companies, as well as Fujifilm and Olympus. Firstly, out of all my cameras, the Fujifilm was the worst for both photo quality and the overall user experience. The Olympus was difficult to use, though it had so-so quality. In the end, I was happy with my Sony's and Canon's, and I've decided that they make some great products.

The Sony's I have had are the DSC-P51 (2 megapixels), DSC-W7 (7 megapixels) and the DSC-W70 (7 megapixels). I loved my P51, however, it was killed during an encounter with the ocean in Hawaii :( Thus, it was time to get my W7. The W7 felt very well made and was quite bulky. It had a great screen, and great photo quality, but only with lots of light around - it was horrible with image noise ("grainyness"). It was also very easy to use. The W70 (which my sister bought) had the same sized screen and same photo size, though it was way thinner than my W7...the new Sony menus used in the W70, and all new Sony cameras is very irritating to use - it isn't intuitive at all, it just looks a lot prettier than the old menus (like on my W7 and P51). The W70, and most of Sony's current W series seems fairly flimsy. The photo quality is about the same as the W7, though it has "fast shutter speeds" to reduce camera shake by using ISO 3200, which unfortunately causes SEVERE image noise. Keep in mind that the W7 is from 2005, and the W70 is from 2007. From my experiences with the W70, I'd never buy another Sony until they clean up their act and introduce some "real" improvements, besides high ISO 3200 shutter speeds.

My Canon SD870IS, which I bought in February 2008 is an 8 MP camera. I've noticed image noise on pictures taken without flash on this camera, though with flash (as most pictures are taken), you usually have to really look for the noise to notice it. The camera is VERY easy to use, and takes amazing photos. On top of the ease of use, the photos come out extra crispy due to the "optical image stabilization", which is far superior than the Sony DSC-W70's ISO 3200 camera shake reduction. I'd 100% recommend that you get a camera with OPTICAL image stabilization. I am sure that if the camera was made as a 6 or even 7 MP camera, the photo quality would be even better, but I'm not complaining. I've also used a Canon A560 camera, with the same results (it doesn't have IS though).

While these are from my own experiences of owning these cameras, I do know from online research that the new compact Sony's (T and W series) are pretty terrible when it comes to image noise. It is for this frustrating reason, alone, that I have to advise you to buy a Canon, because when you pay a few hundred for a new camera and you get crappy pictures, it ruins your excitement to take pictures.

Of course, PLEASE, whatever you choose in the end, do not buy into the megapixel scam, as well as the "high ISO" trick that Sony is notorious for...Base your decision on factors like image stabilization, screen size, zoom, and value. Good luck finding a camera! (By the way, the Canon SD870IS is being phased out for Canon's newer models, so this is a great time to buy this great camera at a discounted price!!)

P.S. If you find your "dream camera" within your budget, go for it, because if you decide to get a cheaper, less featured alternative to save a few dollars, you won't love your new camera the way you should...Taking photographs should be about living the moment without worrying about whether your photo will turn out well.

And sorry about writing an essay, I just really want you to make the right decision, so that you're truly happy and 100% satisfied with your purchase. There's nothing worse than being an uninformed consumer at an electronics store - the sales people WILL take advantage of your naivety.
