Which is better a Canon XL1 or a Canon XL2 video camera/camcorder?

XL2 is better, redesigned lens (XL1 lens was prone to backfocus issues) and a genuine widescreen CCD.

There was an intermediate model called the XL1s, but again, if you have to buy a standard def XL the XL2 is the best of the bunch. If you are buying used then the XL2 is the most recent, an XL1 could be anything up to 10 years old now. An XL1s could be up to 5 years old.

If you are buying new then I doubt you would get an XL1s anywhere these days, so it would need to be an XL2, besides I would also consider the likes of the Sony FX1, although the lens is not as nice as on the XL2, it does offer HDV
