So...Nikon or Canon? Is there a better brand camera?

I am going to be buying a new camera within 2 months and I am hoping to be able to spend around $500-$1,000 on it, maybe more. I am wanting to know between Nikon and Canon, which one makes for a better camera. And what other brands besides those two are great cameras for both personal and professional use?

You've got the right idea, there really are only 2 choices -- Nikon and Canon. It really comes down to preference after that. I personally like Canon, but the reason I went with Canon in the first place is because I had some Canon lenses given to me. In all my research I have found that they are both equally matched, however the Nikon's are slightly more expensive. So if it comes down to price, I would go for Canon. I have the Canon 30D, and it is outstanding. They have come out with the 40D now, and it is even better!

Are you looking for an SLR or just a digital camera?

I recently got an old film SLR and it works great, it is a Minolta. I am saving up for a digital SLR and will probably get a Canon Rebel or a Nikon. They both are really great.

I also have a Kodak digital camera and its only a few years old and I do not really like it. I got a Canon Powershot and its awesome.

Both Nikon and Canon are really great, although I have only personally had a Canon, Kodak and a Minolta. I spoke to a friend of mine who is a professional photographer and he suggested the Canon Rebel which if you find a good deal on it is somewhere in your price range.. Hope I helped!

If you are starting out and just want to take good pictures - buy a Canon. No point in buying a far more expensive camera (Nikon) till you get to the professional stage and buy different kinds lens and stuff.

Panasonic (would you believe that?) makes good cameras too. Look for any camera make that uses Leica lens and go for it! You won't be dissapointed. Happy clicking!

Nikon!! Trust me you will be very happy with the quality. I used to be a photo lab supervisor for CVS and I have seen a lot of pictures and cameras. Definitely nikon.

Its a personal preference, I like Cannon better. I would suggest you do some research and then go to the store and see how each camera (a Nikon and a Cannon) feels and then go from there!!

i like Nikon...sony is also a good brand.
