-IN MY OPINION-
Pluses for Nikon:
- colour rendition (i love it)
- DX format
- better overall build quality in lower-end cameras
Pluses for Canon:
- clearly, most pros use Canon
- L series lenses
So, overall, i guess this is not a discussion in terms of the camera body, as these keep renewing themselves every year and I might purchase a better model when one comes along. But good lenses last forever, so this is the determinant factor.
But i am still not sure which way to go. It seems to me that Canon has a broader and better variety of lenses, and those L lenses are VERY tempting. Does Nikon offer same quality glass? If so, which lenses should I purchase?
Also, I've noticed that some lenses are only compatible with Canon 30D and Digital Rebels. Are the L series lenses compatible with both full-frame cameras (1D, 5D) AND their semi-pro models (30/20D, dRebels)? its ford vs GM, one blonde one brunette, one red one blue
the answer to most of your questions is yes
nikon EX lens are worth a look To clarify one of your questions
The only way a lens can be classified as an L series is to be able to fit on every body (full frame or crop sensor). The S series are crop sensor only and can NEVER be called L. However the 17-55 S f2.8 is a phenominal lens and should be an L, but can't be as it won't work on a full frame body like the 5D Nikon most definitelt has a pro level of lenses. For some reason, they didn't feel the need to "badge" them. I guess the price tells it all.
In any camera line, the "digital only" lenses should not be used on a full frame sensor or a film camera.
For what it's worth, go to my Flickr site and see the Nikon images. http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstei... Please read the description and you will see what lens was used. There are about 9 or 10 made with Nikon Point and Shoot cameras, so don't count them. There are a few made with my wife's D50 or my D70s, using a mid-price 18-70 lens, so don't count them either. Look for the 18-200, 70-300 and especially the 17-55 and 60 mm Macro, which should rival anything Canon has out there. I do a lot of photograph for all different types of shooting ranging from macro to fast action to telephoto.
I had an opportunity to shoot with a Canon and Nikon of equal quality, with equal lenses, and with equal flash settings.
I not only right away noticed the lack of manual priority setting in the canon, but i noticed that the camera did not utilize the full MP available, and the nikon had a better automatic white balance, and the pictures of the Nikon far exceeded the quality of the Canon,
Id Recommend Getting A Nikon Body D80 or higher
Nikon has ED lenses which are top quality glass lenses, Nikon also has VR (image stabilization) lenses.
When buying a lens be sure to make sure that it is an ED lens otherwise you will not take advantage of the capabilities of the camera.
The two Favorite Lenses of mine are the
AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED (7.5x) and the
AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED (3.6x)
These lenses will NOT disappoint!
