I want to buy a digital SLR kit for the Canon Eos400 (digital rebel). Some kits have Canon lenses, others don't

Is it better to have same brand lense as the camera or doesn't it matter much?

The "kit" lens that comes standard, the 18-55mm Canon EF-S lens, is "OK" but not great. It's worth the less than $100 you pay for it as part of the kit, but not any more than that. It's fine to get started with.
There are excellent lenses for Canon DSLRs from several manufacturers -- Canon, Sigma, Tamron, etc. But there are also some real dogs from each of those companies -- it depends on the lens itself, not the manufacturer. Basically in lenses you get what you pay for. If you're only interested in top-quality lenses, then only buy Canon "L" series lenses, Sigma EX-series, etc. -- in other words, the expensive ones.
Do some online research on the lenses you're interested in (including the "kit" lens), where you'll find lens tests, example photos, and a good listing of the positives and negatives about each lens. You can find some bargains that still give good results, and if you're not a pro you will probably be quite happy with less expensive lenses -- they will nearly ALWAYS give you better results with your camera than any point-n-shoot camera or lens. Good luck -- it's a fine camera.

I did a whole month of research on rather or not to get the EOS400. My conclusion is to spend a little more to get the 30D. I got to admit that the 400 is a good camera but do yourself a favor. Spend a little more for the 30D. Its just a better build and better quality camera. If you live in the US, Canon is having a rebate on the 30D so the different is not too much. And for the kit lens? I'll say go for it. A lot of people will tell you to save yourself a few dollars and get a better lens but I think its a bargain to have a extra canon lens for less than $100.

Hi,

You can shop online or you can go to a merchant and use the toll free phone number if you feel more comfortable shopping like that.
There are merchant reviews, product reviews, compare by brand and a lot more. I hope I helped you and I wish you good luck.
