What's the difference between an SD Memory Card, an SDHC, an MMC and an MMC Plus card?

I've just bought a new digital camera - a Casio ex z100 and it says it accepts these memory types, but which is the best type to use and why?

Best type to use: if under 2 GB, the SD card is fine. If over 2 GB, use SDHC.

SD = Secure digital
SDHC = Secure Digital High Capacity.

Generally, faster cards are usually better. Look for 133x speed or faster, if it's marked. It might also say "Class 6".

MMC = multi-media card, an older standard. No point in buying these. In form factor, they are virtually identical to SD memory, but usually have much slower transfer speed.

MMCPlus--faster than MMC, but if you use a card reader, you might not get the fastest transfer speed, as the hardware must be optimized for its use. Thus, it's not as usable as SD or SDHC, which is much more universally supported and accepted.

Good Luck.

SD cards have security features built in and are a little thicker than MMC cards. Most gadgets that use SD cards can also read and write MMC cards. SD cards are more robust but tend to be slightly more expensive.

SD & MMC cards use FAT16 to tell the operating system where the files are. This can only address up to 4Gb and in practice ordinary SD & MMC cards usually only go up to 2Gb.

SDHC and MMC plus use FAT32 enabling much bigger memory sizes. However, to go over 4Gb, you also need an extra wire in the address bus so the electrical connections are slightly different, and older card readers can't recognise them.

Most modern gadgets can use all 4 types of card. Older ones can only manage up to 2Gb SD & MMC. Check out the manufacturer's specifications. If it doesn't say SDHC, it ain't.

The card are slightly different in how the file system is structured. In the end you ask which is the best to use, I would say the SD or SDHC cards. SD cards are more widely used than the MMC cards and usually cheaper. Regular SD cards are cheaper than SDHC cards. You could get a 2GB SD card fairly cheap (around $10.00 at some places) and that would hold about 300 to 350 images. Check out newegg.com and compare prices on those cards you mentioned.
