I'm going to be in a photo class next year and need a good quality camera to take good pictures of all sizes without being able to the megapixels, I need one that is fairly cheap because I am also saving up for a car... any ideas? I have a Sony Cyber-shot 7.2-Megapixel Digital Camera
Model: DSC-W55. Works great. Nice pictures. It's around $200. is that cheap enough? Had the DCS-W5 before and loved it (only 5.1 mps). Go to target or wal-mart, they are probably on sale now because the W55 just came out. Any of the Kodak 'Easy Share' cameras are good and affordable. For a photo class, you are probably going to need an SLR. This will approach $600. My choice would be the Nikon D40.

You can get the D40 with the 18-55 kit lens at B&H Photo available through Yahoo! Shopping or at 1-800-622-4987) for $550 (May 2007) and this is with TWO Lexar 1 GB cards. You can get the same kit with one Lexar Platinum (higher speed) card for $560. Look at some of the DSLR's, but you really do not need one unless Photography is your major. If it is I would look at the Canon Rebel XT. It is a little more then $600 most places with a 18-55mm. But to stay cheaper and if it is not your major then I would look into a Panasonic DMC-LZ7S. It is at Best Buy for $199.99. They take great pictures, the memory is in-expensive b/c it takes SD memory which you can get for under $20. Also it has 6x optical zoom which is better then having a 200mm lens, (which is what you would want to use with your DSLR to give you some zoom and that would be an extra $200). The camera is 7 MP and has optical stabilization to help reduce blurry pics.
Check it out, it is a great camera. Even though I personally own this camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 for the following reasons:
1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
9. And the price is a mere $120 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com.]
