Should I buy a Nikon D40 or Canon Digital Rebel XTi?

Some say Nikons are better, some say Canons. What's the cheaper camera, but better quality? The cheapest Canon I've found with lens kit is about $490, but it might not be a trustworthy site. I NEED THE LENSES, so don't give me any links for just the body of the camera.

I've saved up around... 415 dollars for my camera, so if you can find anything close to that, that'd be great!

Nikon and Canon make nice, affordable entry-level DSLR cameras. Contrary to popular opinion, though, they aren't the only ones.

IMO, before you buy any camera, you should go to digitalcameraguide.com and read the reviews of all the DSLR cameras in your price range. You may find that comparably priced models from Sony or Pentax or Olympus or Fuji or Sigma offer more features and benefits - for the same money - than Canon and Nikon.

Since its your money, your decision should be based on what features and benefits you want on the camera and not on what someone else says you should buy. If you find that Pentax best suits your needs and wants then buy the Pentax. Same with Sony or Olympus or Fugi or Sigma.

Well the Nikon D-40 is a 6 Megapixel camera. The Nikon D-40x is a 10 MP camera/ The Canon Rebel XTi is also a 10 MP camera. Canon just came out with their new Rebel XSi which I believe is 12.5 MP for only $799 with the 18-55mm zoom lens. Beware of those ads in the back of camera mags. Some are real rip-offs. They will pester you to buy extended warranties or "upsell" you to purchase a better lens. Sometimes they will strip out all of the accessories such as the lens caps, neckstraps, cleaning cloths or other factory packaged accessories. If your not careful you could end up spending a LOTTT more than you thought you would. Be sure to put the purchase on a credit card so you can STOP PAYMENT if you get ripped-off.
Also...don't just use the amount of megapixels as a Gold Standard" Some 8 MP camera are better than some 10 MP cameras.

Nikon users will say Nikon, Canon users will say Canon... I vote for the Canon Rebel XTi! I've had mine for a few years and have never had any problems with it. I am still very happy with it!

However, you may want to go to a camera store and try out both cameras before you make your final decision.

With your budget, you may want to consider the Canon Rebel XT, currently available on Amazon.com for about $450... and it does come with the 18-55mm lens.

Here is a side by side comparison of the Canon Rebel XT, the XTi, and the Nikon D40.

Hi there. :-) I was recently in your delimma so I'll just share what I learned. I agree that you may want to go see cameras to decide which works best with you and your style, but going on technicality and information, here's what I have.

I walked into a camera store and explained my situation and was advised that you can go with Nikon and get the same performance as Canon, which is usually more expensive for cameras, lenses, etc, especially when/if you decide to upgrade to a D40 Canon or a Nikon D80. Because of that I went with Nikon. Just starting out I needed to go with what is affordable for me. I ended up with more cash available when it came time to purchase and I went with the Nikon D80. You may want to consider going up to D40x being as D40 is only 6 megapixels, but it's all about what suits your needs.

Good luck!

Take a look at this.

To be sure you spend your money on a camera system that will serve your for years, you will need to go into a camera store that sells both and then hold them and see which fits your hands and your needs the best ... this includes which has the easiest menu for you to use.

Look through this site to see what camera may be the best for you if your taste in image making is sophisticated enough

definitely a Rebel. they're a better value and they last longer. in my opinion, Rebels are the best SLRs and DSLRs on the market. and I've seen them cheaper than $490 I've seen them $350 and $400 @ the Best Buys in my area.

I say you should try to buy used and get what you can. Ebay and craigslist are decent ways to do this. You can pick up a fully equipped XT with lens for a mere 200 that way.

I own a Nikon D40 and i am very happy with it. The clarity of the pictures is great. Can shoot 100s (almost 1000) of pics with one charge of the battery. Is just plain great. Go for Nikon.

yea the rebel XTi would be the best choice im a olympus e510 fan myself loaded with features and crazy awsome kit but 650 bucks though

rebel xti

maybe a rebel xt

I LOVE NIKONS!!! They have the best lens, it's always worth it!
