You could check a local camera shop, but if the shop has any 35mm SLRs, they are likely to be extremely overpriced.
I bought a Canon TL (1968) off of Ebay, for about thirty dollars and it was in great condition. I later purchased a Canon AE-1 (1974), with a wide-angle lens, telephoto lens, flash, and filters for about sixty dollars. All in excellent condition. (I really wanted the wide-angle lens only, but the entire package was such a deal I didn't want to pass; in the end, I like my AE-1 a lot more). It is just very important to only buy something like this from a seller with good ratings. CAREFULLY read the description or you'll end up with a parts camera and will likely lose interest in a great hobby.
Or, you could try other markets, such as Craigslist or your local newspaper ads. I'm sure there is someone local looking to sell off a dust-gathering camera.

If you are seriously interested in film photography, almost any old-school SLR will be a great starter. Both of my Canons are wonderful. I had never used any SLR at all when I purchased my TL, it was a great starter camera. I've also had the pleasure of using a Nikon and a Yashica from the 70's, bother were very nice.

If you don't want to go second-hand (or fifteenth-hand with as old as some of these cameras are), you could opt for a Canon film rebel. I'm sure that other companies (such as Nikon or Olympus) also 35mm SLRs. You could probably order off of their websites.

And if you're worried about any quality discrepancies between newer and older cameras, I can assure you that my canon AE-1 takes pictures of quality comparable to any new Canon 35mm Rebel.
