Does anyone have any insight on Dwight Abnor, NYC Model Expo? |
My children went to a model search in Austin, Texas and were chosen to attend the Dallas, Texas Model Search in February 2007. The only money we have spent is for photo shoot that will be in Austin in a few days. These are photographers from New York. Unfortunately, Dwight Agnor and his Manhattan Model Search makes a lot of money off of model hopefuls, but delivers very little in return. Yes, there are some representatives from major New York agencies, however Dwight pays them to attend and they do not take it that seriously. They get paid whether they actually select models or not. What Dwight offers to the model hopefuls is called a scouting service. This means that his company does not have any direct relationships with potential clients. The most they could do would be to try to get you signed with a real agency. If they do, they will get a finders fee of approximately 5% of your children's earnings for the duration of their careers. However, whether he does or not, he still gets loads of money just by getting you to go to his convention. As I'm sure you noticed, there were vendors at the convention. Each vendor also paid Dwight's company. Honestly, photographers in New York are a dime a dozen and most are mediocre at best. Any photographer that has to do the convention circuit to find work cannot be that good. Additionally, as a work of advice from an ex-model, do not invest in any photos before you get your kids signed to an agency. Agencies want to see plain snapshots, not posed photos, when deciding who to take. Plus, once they sign your kids, they will likely throw away your photos thus wasting your money. In my opinion, you would do better to take your kids directly to the agencies. It will save them that 5% of their earnings further down the line and their chances are just as good. You do not need a middle man. |
