Does anyone know about how much $ professional head shots cost?

1 out of 3 of my children got a call back for highlite modeling agency. Now they want me to have professional head shots taken but are $300.00 to have them taken by their photographer. They are members of the BBB so I don't believe it's any kind of scam. Can anyone give me some feedback. They haven't asked for any money. They just want me to have the head shots done. I know to make it in the business it's vital. Just need some constructive feedback. Please no JohnBennet Ramsey stories pple!!!!

It depends on your market. $300 for a head shot only seems to be a lot. If it were more than that, say 2 or 3 "looks" or changes of clothes/location, I would say that's about right. If you have any theater groups or acting schools in your area, check with them. Most working actors have current head shots and not only should know what the going rate is, but also should be able to refer you to a decent, honest photographer (not to say the one the agency is necessarily not).

Also, I know in Florida it's illegal for a modeling agency to sell photography or even to have a "photographer" they send all their people to. They can only offer referrals. If this is the case in your area, you may want to be wary of this agency.

You said they didn't ask for your money yet so for now just do your research and get a good photographer, charging a fair market rate. If that's $300, well than that's what you pay.

Last thing; remember, an agent works for you, not the other way around. If your child truly has the ability to get paying work as an actor or model then the agency will be all over you trying to make it as easy as possible to get him or her the materials necessary to start making them money (remember, they SHOULD be making all their money from commissions not scouting fees and photo packages). Just keep this idea in mind moving forward. If you don't like what they are offering in terms of getting your child going in the business and they TRULY have some ability to get work, then there will be other agencies out there ready and willing to work with you. Keep your eyes and mind open to the possibilities, including that these people are less interested in booking jobs and more interested in just getting fresh people into their system.

It CAN be a nasty business, especially on the front end but if you are aware, you should be fine.

Good luck! Source(s): 16 years as a professional photographer including 7 years doing freelance model portfolios and head shots.
Hi--did you try www.Craigslist.com in your city? That list usually has photographers that need business and might work for less. Also, you can try Glamour Shots, but, to be honest, I think their price is very reasonable. Best of luck.
