Career Choice, Major Switch?

I am one semester away from graduating with my Bachelors in Psychology. However I cannot seem to muster any interest in it these days. I am interested in nothing but Photography. It is the only thing that makes me feel good, the only thing I get out of bed for.

But that would mean a new major of photography, mean starting all over. I am not sure what i want anymore, but i have always been so sure i wanted to be a psychologist.

But my mental state is in terrible condition, and I don't know that i will ever be well enough to be a child psychologist. I also don't know that I will ever be a good enough photographer to make money doing this.

I am confused.

Here is some of my work from my intro to photography course.

If you click on "all" at the bottom you can see all of my work, but the older struf on bottom is just me playing with my camera not knowing what I'm doing.

first responder obviously did not really read the question. thanks for the effort though.

I suggest that you stick with your current major until you graduate, since you are so close.

For right now, consider photography as an enjoyable hobby which you can gradually learn through practical experience while you are earning a living as a psychologist.

Then, you can adjust your goals again in a few years if you feel the need.

Finishing your psy. bachelor would be a good idea. It will show to clients/employers that you can get the job done.

Regarding your photography career, here's my advice.

The first thing to consider in choosing a career is love. What do you love doing? What would you really enjoy doing? This is the PASSION part of every great career. You seem to love photography. Trust your love for this activity.

TALENT

Next, it's not enough to "like to do something." You have to be fairly good at it, and keep getting better. You wonder if you will ever be a good enough photographer. This is a normal question, so don't beat yourself up about it. Just focus on your love of photography and you will naturally become really good at it.

WORLD'S NEED

Next, even if you become "good at something you like to do," you must focus your passion and talent on fulfilling a NEED experienced by other people. Do you understand what I mean? Only by fulfilling a need can you get paid. Otherwise, it's just a hobby. One idea is to develop a specialization within photography (portrait; wedding; product photography; etc.).

MEANING

If you answer the above three questions (what is my passion? what is my talent? what is the need I'm serving?), then you're on track for an amazing career that makes you fee ALIVE every day while paying you good money. The last ingredient is meaning, that is, the degree to which your work is aligned with what you believe in. This comes naturally with age and experience, so I would not worry about it so much.

I have to add, from the tone of your question, that you seem to be feeling a bit down. Really, don't worry about your career! Trust yourself. The mere fact that you are AWARE of how you feel about psychology (especially your concern about being well enough to assist children) and how positive you feel about photography is a great sign of self-knowledge!

Try to focus on what makes you feel good. Only then can you be calm and positive and clear-minded enough to make good career choices.

Feel free to ask me more questions at the site below if you wish!

Good luck!
