What does it mean when people say 'smile with your eyes'?

My finace is a photographer, and parents will frequently say this to their children. What does that mean? Neither he nor I (nor the children) have any idea what this means, but we hear it frequently. It has no effect on the kids' expressions, as they have no clue what mom is trying to say.

Sounds like it means - think happy thoughts about the camera, what you're doing etc and project it through your eyes.

I dunno whether this sort of this is possible or easy to fake like a toothy grin is.

When you smile without meaning it, just politely, your eyes stay cold and it shows.
When you truly are happy, your eyes lit up and they seem to be smiling themselves.
It's not just a metaphore or something.
If you can't see it in your family's eyes, you really should get worried.
