How much should I pay to photographer who'll come to my house to take pictures of my children's? |
This is unique situation, because the photographer is my acquaintance and he said I could pay him whatever I feel to pay. I have no idea how much the proper number. He's a freelance photographer. Is he providing prints or CD, editting, etc... Is he just bringing a camera, maybe a flash?? Or is he bringing backgrounds, lighting, foreground material, etc... Generally, a couple of hours of time, could be worth $50-60 for home portraits. Sounds like he is there as much as a favor, as a job, so may not be expecting much anyway. Provide as much as you can in pay, and set up some sandwiches and drinks (a personal touch), so he knows you appreciate his time and effort as a freind, not just a contractor. 50 dollars if he can produce good quality photographs of your kids and not just snapshots my photographer friends charge any where from just a few dollars for a shoot to $200 an hour. i honestly don't know, but i wouldn't want to offend a friend, so try to be more generous than tight...but 200 is a bit (*) much. It depends on the area you are located in and you can look in the phonebook and call a local photographer and ask what their minimum charge would be for on location shots of your kids. Besides getting an idea of what the market rate is, they will ask you some questions about what you want in terms of the images themselves (portraits, kids at play, birthday party, etc.) and explain what there is in terms of packages they may provide. There can be low resolution images on CD, CD and prints, etc. This will help you and your freelance friend get the most out of the shoot. Also, and I strongly recommend this, no matter how close a friend he/she is, have them provide you a contract. It benefits both of you. Here, in San Francisco, my basic charge would be about $250. That would cover 2 hours (a minimum billing time) no prints, standard post processing (color correction, cropping if needed) and images on CD. Remember to check what the rates are in your area. For many places in the US, I'm expensive. For New York City, L.A., Boston and other places, I'm not. Hope this helps. photographer/photojournalist if he gives you a CD of images and the printing and running around is up to you then the above numbers may be right for mates rates. Normally a specialist Portrait Pro would charge at least $200 and take about two hours. (setting up lights etc) Its their time, overhead, petrol, equipment-lights, taxes, travel time and maybe some prints ect. So a feed and at least $60 If they are great and you are really happy do something for them later once you see some prints. |
