Does anyone have information as to how to become a children's portrait photographer?

Thank you for stopping by.

I have a few major passions....writing, children (especially babies), and photography.

I do not however, have any education in photography.

I have been told many times I have a gift not only with children (many years as a nanny etc), but especially capturing them in candid shots that people love. I truly love it and the children respond well to me when I am taking pictures.

When I write, I write cute captions on websites, and would like to incorporate more (journals, notes to relatives etc). My true gift...is the written word.

I'm not sure if it's worth it to learn scrapbooking?

I need to know the following:

With a digital camera, is a photography class or certificate definitely necessary?

What is the best digital camera to buy (under $1000).

Where do professional photographers print their actual portraits for their customers?

If you have any ideas, experience or any information....they are terrifically appreciated!

Cheers!

Well, first, scrapbooking is a hobby -- ANYONE can do it, so unless you're sincerely interested in doing it, don't waste your time going to 'scrapbooking classes'. Scrapbooking would be a good additive to have once you have your photography business under your belt -- you can add a professional scrapbook as part of a package you might sell!

As far as cameras, my personal opinion is Nikon has the best. You don't want to get an auto focus camera -- you want to make sure you can swap lenses and things like that. You're going to spend at least $600 on it. To start out, just go to Best Buy, really, and ask the camera department there. Tell them exactly what you want to do -- that you want to do it professionally, and they'll set you up with the camera that is best for you and your skill level and needs. Once you've learned that camera, and learned more about cameras and photography in general, you can upgrade to a higher quality camera

The best photographers have their own dark rooms, but you can find a trusted developer in any city.

Finally, get started at a studio photography place. Any portrait studio, including ones at Departments Stores, would give you great hands on training and experience!
Also, Hospitals have photography studios that take pictures of newborns and their parents -- I think working there would be so fun!

Good luck!

No, you don't need any type of certificate or education per-se to be a children's photographer.

However, if you want to "get into the business," you need experience. A photography class will help a GREAT DEAL in understanding the fundamentals of lighting and lens apertures.

If you'd want to work as a studio photographer, you'd need experience and a portfolio of your work. Also having an understanding of studio lighting, and SLR cameras is a must.

For a good digital camera I recommend:

They have good prices, and excellent customer service.

Since you don't have technically-trained photography skills, I recommend a Canon Powershot G9 digital camera. It's an EXCELLENT camera, and has many functions of a SLR, but in a point-and-shoot format.

If you do decide to take a class of some sort, and want to become serious about the photography then a Digital SLR camera is what you actually want. A good one for under $1000 would be a Nikon D40

A lot of professional photographers use a professionl print service, here an example:

OR, they print it themselves with a variety of printers the one in the example is a Epson R1900 which prints 13" wide X 44" long but some of the printers can be up to 44" wide :

As for the scrap-booking: not my area. However I imagine that's more of a pastime in making them.

I highly recommend taking a photography class at a community college. Even if it is a film photography class, the fundementals are almost the same.

hi,

the first thing I would recommend for kids is to put your money in a reflex. they are so quick, if you want to capture the "right" moment, better use a reflex... the moment you press the button, is the moment the capture is performed. (there is a slight delay but none that a person can feel)

then... the lens :D
if you want to go for portraits best is when these little guys are not running or jumping everywhere. often you'll end up shooting "indoor". to cope with that, you might want to use a wide apperture lens (something like f/2.8). furthermore, you'll benefit nice blurred background allowing you to focus on the kid : http://flickr.com/photos/fabulist/140322...

regarding the camera, I think Canon or Nikon are ok... if you buy a Canon 400D, you might cut a good deal as a new replacing model as been announced and, at the end of the day, it should be fine enough for what you want to use it for.

then, there are a couple of lenses, like sigma DC EX 18-50mm f/2.8, that is pretty ok

for the prints then, I don't know exactly where you are but you should find some interesting comparator for online photo printing services. use your preferred search engine for that! :D Mind that the price is not the only selection criteria, the way colors are handled is also very important
