What are some of the tips and tricks for children photography? portraits for kids?

Hi all: I have been a serious amateur photographer and I have recently start shooting professionally. I will be taking pictures for a mother and her 6 year old son this coming Saturday. I would like to know if there's any tips and tricks on taking portraits for kids. I always try to get to know my subject a little before I start shooting and this is my first time shooting a 6 years old. I will like to know how to get the kid to work with me and not getting bored during the session. I thought about bribing him with a toy or candy bar but that's about it. Any help welcome! thx

Don't sit them down, pose them, and expect to get good pictures. It just won't happen. If you MUST have formal shots then give them something to play with while you take the shot to get a natural look.

I've found with children that it's much better to simply turn them loose in the area you wish to photograph and follow them with the camera. Watch what they do naturally, and photograph.

Does the kid like sports? Bring a basketball or something...
Find out his likes (call his mom) and bring in some stuff that would keep him occupied.

You'll find a load of stuff here for free, including how to get the best out of photographing kids and babies:

EDIT - I have to respond to a poster below: NEVER, ever give children sweets or candy, unless you ask their parents first... some children are diabetic and you could cause a serious medical emergency!

i think it come naturally just take them with out the children knowing and there you'll have it

Well, I was a photographer a few years back and I absolutely loved the children. I would say first, that you should make a big deal about how pretty/handsome they are. Compliment them much and especially after every shot. Sometimes, depending on their age and their personality, you can use one of those fuzzy feather dusters to tickle their nose. This works especially well with babies and toddlers. But with 6 year olds, talk about their favorite things, what they did over the holidays, their pets, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc. Develop a friendship with them. And you yourself, SMILE ALOT! If you are having fun, they will too. Hope this helps. Good Luck! And have FUN!!!

Candy!

Try to keep it as short as possible (30min max), give compliments like good job, high fives are usually great, and be honest... if you say 2 more shots that means 2 more shots. If you're going to bribe him then be sure to ask his mom about it first... some parents are very sensitive about this.
Good luck!
