Computer Processor???

I need a new desktop computer for home - basic but able to write DVDs, interact with scanner, digital camera, play music, connect to internet wirelessly if possible etc

I was going for Dell as my old one's lasted 7yrs easily -was the best at the time.

So looking at computers here:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/produc...

but which should I get: ??
Intel Celeron D processor
or Intel Pentium 4

They let you alter what you want in the computer which leaves a lot of descisions - any help appreciated!
I don't want to spend over the top but I want it to last.

or the Intel Pentium D processor sorry!

pentium 4 sucks dick go with the other one i know i have a pentium 4 in my dell and it sucks dick it so slow not enufe prosser speend in thoes they should have never made them.......

Intel Pentuim 4 still is slow but faster than celeron because Celereon D is sucky

Have you considered a Mac?

Let your budget dictate! Spend what you can afford!!

Can't realily say from EE point of view which is best only real world. The P4 has been a stable processor for a long time now. With VISTA coming from MS any system is out for a limited life. The requirements for VISTA is much higher than any of today's systems. Get the lower cost now cause with the new OS everythng will be changing.... Keep this for 2-3 yrs max.

Pentium to Celeron every time. Celeron is very much cut down in capabilities Pentium... it's advisable only if you are looking at low-cost solutions (and if you are looking at Dell or any other brand-name, the differences in the price are not likely to be intimidating).

intel pentium 4 my suggestion for a desktop is stay with dell get this one DimensionTM 9150

Would suggest going with the Dual core as this will allow you to work with some of the newer things that are coming on the market soon that use the new dual core technology. It never hurts to go ahead and spend the little extra now to stay current with the newest technology that will emerge on the market place soon. As for the DVD and other stuff most every computer is compatible to do this that is currently being made. And now with the new usb wireless drives any machine can connect wirlessly.

At least get a dual core processor. You would love the faster multi-processor (two processors!) in one computer. As for the other configuration, make sure you have a good sized harddisk drive, and lots of memory, and a good sized flat screen monitor. Computer perherials are the least of worry, just get something basic and simple first. Once you are more accustomed to what you require, you can go for better accessories and it would not cost an arm or a leg. Oh yes, finally, it would be good to have a good set of speakers with woofer. You would not want to miss music while you work and play on the computer. I think that sums my answer.

P4 is any day better than P celeron..
there are many new dual core and 64 bit processors available in the market ..check it out
cos the forthcoming trend will be 64 bit computing/dual core processors if not duo at least 64 bit and your p4 may become outdated within a year or two.
windows next version vista is also 64bit OS..
there is a wide range AMD 64bit processors comparatively cheaper than Intel
think twice before investing

Celeron is garbage, stick with the Pentium, there is no better. If you are going to spend, do it and that way you won't be putting out double for the amount in repairs by buying the wrong one. Pentium is the one that I chose to put in the one that I just built. The first thing we were taught in class many years ago by my professor was that Celeron was garbage. So please stick with the Pentium. It is worth it. You need dual BIOS, not the dual processor, some folks have it backwards, the dual processor is in the Motherboard and expensive and not necessary. But the dual BIOS is necessary. The main supporter of Dual BIOS is Gigabyte Motherboards.

As you can see from the other anwers there is a difference of opinion. I have had the celeron processor on a Dell but it was a 2.4 mg processor with 512 Ram. I now have Pentium 4 3.1 mg. The speed of the processor is more important than the name. You failed to mention speed. Get a least a gig of Ram.

if you're choosing between pentium and celeron then pentium is better. celeron is a low end version of pentium. i have a pc that is still running with 98 on it that was bought in 94 but i can only use it for email and office applicatons, it's a pentium not dell its just generic, something i pulled together coz during those times pcs are expensive.

go with either a dell and ask them or a Compaq presario...or hp th
ey are good also i have d processor in mine and it loads up lots faster then our dell but dell can make one specifically to your needs and have it to u in two business days or sooner

If you have the cash to spend, then go with the Pentium processor. It will give you better performance.

The Celeron D will probably be useful longer than the Pentium 4. It is later architecture so later software will operate on it and possibly not on the Pentium 4 (but we are talking a ways down the road). Generally, though, the Celeron chip set is slower, producing less heat, and is therefore mostly found in laptops, where heat dissipation is a big issue. A Celeron D is about 75% the speed of a Pentium D. I think you will be satisfied with either.

As for staying with Dell, or any other manufacturer, it is a shot in the dark these days. The market demands prices remain as low as possible, which is the driving force for manufacturers purchasing computer components. Computer manufacturers contract periodically to purchase these components, and (this is sort of exaggerated but makes the point) if one manufacturer has a component for a penny less than another, even though the other is 100% better in every aspect, they will go for the cheaper component.

Nevertheless, for what you would like to do, again, I think you would be satisfied with either.

I hope this helps.

I dunno why has no one metioned it(i did not visit your link though)
but AMD processors are better than whatever Intel has to offer at this moment...I don't know what you plan to use your machine for but if you're into gaming or image maniuplation...I'd suggest AMD 64 processors...It's sure better than whatever Intel is selling at the same price tag...going by your question here...i assume you don't upgrade frequently either...so a 64 bit computer would be better in my opinion because 32 bit going to be obsolete sooner or later..

The difference in price between a pentium 4 and a Pentium D is not that much be sure you get a 900 series Pentium D not an 800 series, the difference relates to the L2 cache size which on a 900 is 2mb vs 1 mb on an 800 series, another important thing is the hdd presently all new computers come with SATA interface, not sure if you can get a western digital Raptor in a mass produced (Dell, HP) computer but the Raptor is the best it is enterprise class with a 5 year warranty, and a MTBF 1.4 million hours

If you could get a Motorola CPU----

PENTIUM 4

Build your own PC for a lot less money, using the specs you want
