I'm an avid photographer but only have a 3mp vivitar camera which as you can imagine doesn't really do anything for me lol.
I would like to buy a new digital camera but as there are so many on the market, I am unsure which brand/model to purchase. I would ideally like a 6mp or above one with a high ISO so that I may take good quality photos where the subject is in a dark light.
I would also like one with a black and white effect but this can be left out if needs be.
I also like to take close up photos so one with a good macro would be good too. I have no idea what a good close up range would be. Could anybody help me with that also?
I do not have a price range as such as I will save up as long as I can to get a great camera :)
Thanks in advance :)

Apart from their big brother, the S9100/S9600 these are probably the best you can get before forking out for a Digital SLR such as the Nikon D40

UPDATE:
My S6500fd has arrived, and it's the mutts nuts.... looks just like a camera should, has more settings than you can shake a stick at, ISO of up to 3200................... choice of taking pics in Standard colour, "chrome effect" colour + Black&White. Not bad for 拢155. sory i dont have a lot of advice for you but i hear these SLR cameras are very good as long as you get a good make of one, but unfortuneatley they cost a bit more but it all depends on how much your willing to play and like tomtom said its your own personal choice and do your best to find a good quality one. Good luck =D it is not about m/pixells but the make of the camera but saying that try not to go bellow 4 million m/pixels i have a fuji camera with ony 3.2 m/pixels (brilliant ) but a freind bought a avatar 3.2 m/pixels (rubbish) I suggest buying a sony w80,w90,or w200
w80-7.2 MP resolution only differen on w90 its 8.1mp
Carl Zeiss庐 3X Optical zoom
Face Detection
Double Anti-Blur Solution
HD Output1 to your HDTV
In-camera retouching
31 MB Internal Memory
only CON pro duo memory cards are pricy 1gb 34.99 2gb64.9 4gb89.99 if u have a psp just use the memory card u have
2.5"2 LCD screen
The DSC-W200 Adds:
12.0 MP resolution for even greater image detail
Higher sensitivity 鈥?ISO 3200 (at 12MP), ISO 6400 (at 3MP) either buy a sony or panasonic digital camera. the sony range of cameras have carl zeiss lenses which are pure glass lenses. probly the best on the market. panasonic use a company leica to produce the lens that they use (which is also good) both types of cameras are reasonably priced between 130 to 200 pounds. i do agree with the rest of the guys and it is all about personal choice. do read guides but some are very biased to particular manufacturers.
slr cameras are expensive and bulky but they do take better photos due to them having better range of lenses. Go for professional digital cam. they are always good especially sony products.
Visit http://digitalcameras.fateback.com I suggest my camera with plenty of zoom, which I'm sure Sony is phasing out by now. Sony Cybeshot DSC-H2.
6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom. gives excellent 8X10 print. Has image stabilizer, manual controls in addition to auto, 1 second delay between shots, very good on AA rechargeable batteries, and comes with battery charger. If you want a compact camera, go with the Fujifilm Finepix F30, since it goes up to ISO 3200. Fujifilm is the expert at low light performance for compact digital cameras. If you want a bigger camera, get the Olympus 550UZ. It goes even higher, depending on the resolution of the image. First question is size, do you want a pocket camera or are you prepared to carry something bigger?
I suggest a pocket camera with you all the time, I use a Nikon
Coolpix 7600, I carry it at all times and use it for 80% of my work. It give me excellent A3 prints.
For wild life and other photography where you need a longer lens look at the Canon S5 IS, I have found this great camera.
In your choice think about batteries, AA re-chargables and a battery charger will save a lot of money, always carry spare bateries with you.
Choice of memory card is important, SD is the most commonly used now. Carry a spare card with your spare batteries.
Please email me if you need more help.
Keep your Vivitar as a backup . I've got the same problem!
I'm after a new compact camera and I'm a bit bewildered by the sheer range. I've had a Sony cyber-shot for ages and it's been great, but past it's best and I've got a nice holiday coming up.
However, if you're after an SLR, then try the Canon EOS 350 or 400. I've used the 350 a lot and it's very user-friendly. It's small-ish and quite light, but robust and there is an affordable 300mm lens to fit it. It comes with a standard 18-55mm lens which is pretty good. A whole 10 megapixels too, which is good up to A3, I believe.
The 400 is the new 350, but you can still get the 350 for around 拢350 on t'internet. Check out the Fuji s9600, excellent macros, really big zoom (28-300mm), 9mp, ISO 1600, about 拢260 ($520).
The tilting LCD is excellent, it has the clearest LCD in the world (most megapixels) and the RAW files can take 18 Megapixel photos (some Fuji magic with the CCD).
Seriously, take a look at this camera. I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck
