What kind of digital camera is excellent on picture quality, but decently priced?

I'm looking for a minimum of 6 mega-pixel.

Canon makes great digital cameras, both SLR and point-and-shoot. I use a Digital Rebel, which you can get in 3 versions: the original 6.3 megapixel, the 8.1 xt, and the 10 megapixel xti. The first two you can get used for $400-$700, the xti will run you $850-$1000. But since the Rebel is an SLR, you may want to shell out money for a more versatile lens later on. The 18-55mm lens it comes with is ok, but is pretty limited in what it can give you.

As for point-and-shoots, Canon's Powershot G series are a great way to go. When I was a magazine editor, the company issued us Canon's Powershot G3 (this was 4 years ago) and it gave us really good 5-meg photos and was very easy to use. The series has advanced since then (the last I heard of was a Powershot G6) but they're pretty inexpensive for a good camera $400-$500).

looking for a 6 myself so it will be interesting who answers

casio exilim 7.2 megapixels....best reviewed two years ago.
www.cnet.com around 300-400 bucks

What sort of digi are you looking for though.. a DSLR or a "point and click"?

sony cyber shot has one in 7 pixcel........although i have 3.6 but the quality of the picture n the camera both are really fine........n its not very expensive either

megapixel doesn't always determine camera's quaility on taking pictures.. some old Kodak/Canon digital SLR has only 2 mega-pixel but cost a fortune and take really fantastic pictures topping most of camera sold today..

if you are an experienced beginner, i suggest to buy Canon S3 IS.. it takes relatively nice colors with much flexible diaphragm, good contrast pictures..

it's a good investment... i personally have an DSLR but i think not to practical to carry it everywhere, so if i have enough money, i'll take this one

good luck

Kodak Easy Share. Quality pictures. Reasonably priced.

anyrthing by Canon

Canon has several models, with a variety of prices

I also have a Konica/Minolta that has served me well

Nikon D50, this is one of the greates cameras that I own, its a 6mp and it does better than some other cameras, i've seem other photographers use. As someone stated earlier, its not always the size of the mega pixels that guarantee clarity.

all depends on what you will use it for.

Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for being a 10 MP camera.

I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.

The A620 was rated about twice as good as any as far a battery life. I hope the A630 and A640 are just as good. Use Energizer e2 LITHIUM batteries and you will be happy with battery life.

With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want a sleek, smaller camera that will easily fit in your pocket, consider the Canon Powershot SD600. It gives up some of the features of the A630 and 640, but at least it still has an optical viewfinder.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will need a decent memory card, though. I'd say get at least 512 MB.

I have two great cameras:
1) Is a kodak EasyShare DX7630 (point and shoot) 6.1 mp : I have had it for two years and it has great image quality. Pretty cheap now.

2) i have a Nikon D80 (DSLR) 10.2 mp: I just got this camera in october 2006 and it's freaking awesome! it even has photoediting software IN the camera! Down side: It cost me $1400.00 but it came with a butt-load of stuff.

I don't know what your budget it but the D80 is just like a Nikon D200 for half the price.
