A good digital camera for a 10 year old?

My 10 year old- a rather responsible kid- would like a digital camera for her birthday. Anyone have a good suggestion on kind, place to purchase, etc.? I really don't want to spend a large amount on a camera because 1) she is still a child
2) cameras are changing/improving everyday
3) the prices are coming down all the time.

What would a 10 year old do with a camera my thought is that she will love it for a week and will be done with it later good luck though

You may want to get here a cheap camera like the Canon A530, A520 or the SD600. They are all around the $200 mark but if you go lower you may have to look into a Kodak but I do not recommond any Kodak camera due to their quality and pictures are not up to bar with other companies.

10 is a tricky age as it puts them in between a "real" point and shoot digital and some of the more kid friendly digitals such as those offered by Fisher-Price.

I recently bought my 10 year old son (who like your daughter understands how to take care of things and may be a bit of a gadget freak), a Fuji FinePix A500.

I like this camera for a number of reasons 1) Price <$100 2) Decent build quality 3) good picture quality 4) Runs on good old "AA" batteries 5) it uses pretty standard and easy to find xD memory cards 6) Price (drops, fingers on the lens, half eaten PB&J's won't really drive you nuts)

I picked mine up at WalMart as part of a bundle that came with a small memory card, batteries, carrying case, and a relatively useless tripod (but he thought it was cool so that's all that matters).

I agree with KoKo on the Kodak's, they are feature rich and take good pictures but their build quality is less than stellar. Search the board here and you'll find a lot of "My Kodak EasyShare just died...".

Nothing against Kodak's as my first camera was a 126 Instamatic and I have a nice collection of some early Brownie's. In fact I wish Kodak would get itself together and build a bit better quality camera to carry on their tradition of affordable quality cameras.

Fuji's seem to be a little more robust, and this camera is relatively straightforward to use. I find myself throwing it in my camera bag with my dSLR quite often just to have a light weight snapshot taker in tow.

Good luck and keep encouraging her to take pictures. The more she takes the better she'll get!

My suggestion would be Fugifilm Finepix A500 or Canon PowerShot A530. Fugi should run about $100, Canon just a bit more. Both are same quality; quite decent.

Also consider Olympus. Our Sunday paper has been running a 5mp Olympus with 3x optical zoom, bundled with a bigger memory card for about $150. The build quality seems a bit better on Oly than the entry level Fuji.
