Ready to purchase a new digital camera - suggestions?

I'm looking for a digital camera that will take great action shots as my children play soccer, but I will also use it a lot for portraits, landscape shots, scenery. I want something that has good zoom, and lots of memory. I'm looking to spend up to $1000 with zoom lense and all.

If I can purchase from OfficeDepot I can use my work account/discount to help reduce the price. Links to specific cameras would be great.

It will be by necessity a DSLR. Only DSLR's have virtually no shutter lag. I think that OfficeDepot sells Canon DSLR's, so see what they have in the way of a Rebel XTi with lens kit. For shooting field sports I would recommend the 75 mm - 300 mm zoom.

See links below

Look at the new Canon cameras, they are sweet and reasonably priced and are nice to batteries(always use rechargeable-enviormently friendly and last much longer!).

I don't know how much your discount is, but the Canon XTi is a good choice. So is the Nikon D40 or maybe even the D40X if you get a good enough discount.

It would be nice to have the 18-200 VR lens, if you can find it. This would probably be in your budget if you stick to the D40 and if you get a deep enough discount.

If you can't find that, you can surely find the new 55-200 VR and you'll have the same shooting range. You definitely want the "VR," though. For soccer, you might be able to to just use the 55-200 without any lens swapping.

If you want to go out there on a limb and try a brand new lens, Sigma just came out with their own "optical stabilzation" 18-200 lens. It's due on the shelf next month and it will sell for about $550. You could get this with either a Canon or Nikon mount, which is a good thing if you buy Canon, because they have not come out with a similar lens yet. It's also a good thing because Nikon apparently can not keep up with the demand.

Canon cameras are GREAT. I own 3 Canons and a Sony camera. I have to say the Canon one takes nice and clear picture while the sony, ehh not so well. I have used a Kodak before and it is not as good as the Canon.

The Nikon D40 is one of the best entry-level SLR's you can get--at a very attractive price point.

Ritz Photo/Wolf Camera has a kit for $799 with 2 lenses. An 18-55mm for everyday shooting and an 55-200 for those soccer shots.
