What's better: oly SP-570 UZ or Oly DSLR E-510 ?

I would like to move on from my average digital camera to a move powerful system, and currently my top 2 options are these two olympus cameras:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_sectio...

which one do you think is better. I opt for the new SP-570 because of it's features and because im sure i'll never be willing to pay $1000+ for a super zoom lens for the SLR, and also because of it's speed.

but which do you guys think is better for the price? (The E-510 can actually be purchased for about $650)

Having taken photos for decades and been down the SLR/carry four lenses/plus a 3x converter/Flash/extension rings...I would now always opt for point and shoot! Have you seen the physical size of a lens that would do 500mm in a DSLR?? I don't want to carry that around much! It is no fun having to try and anticipate which lens to attach, only to have to change it 30 seconds before the shot because of the compostion. I am waiting for the SP570 to be released, this will be my third PNS...each one is more MP and I am still using my first, an olympus C-770 UZ 10x 4MP, great camera!..just remember, if all you are doing are snaps that are mostly looked at on your PC or 7x5 prints, you'll never know the difference. Being able to zoom in and not have to crop afterwards is fantastic and one single package from 28mm equiv to > 500mm has to be a great option...hope the sensor is up to it, otherwise I for one will be dissappointed...enough rambling...ciao

Does the $650 price for the E510 include a lens that's equal to that of the SP-570?

That said, assuming the cost w/ lens is decent, then I'd tell you without any reservations that I'd take a DSLR over the SP-510 ANY DAY!!

The responsiveness and flexibility of the DSLR just cannot be equaled by the SP-570.

HTH

I have the Olympus E-500. The E-510 is not that different. Just know that I love my camera it's very easy to understand and to use it to it's best potential. I was in your position about the same time last year, and I opted for the E-500 that came with a Telephoto Lens. It was $800 at Circuit City plus the 2 year warrenty. I will tell you now to check up on Amazon.com for accessories, I got a $200 Fish-Eye Lens for $42 with Shipping.

I will tell you that my camera is very easy to handle, and the body itself is nearly weightless. I am in a Digital Photography class so I have the option of a teacher, and if I knew what I know now I would have opted for the sp-570. But I had little knowledge besides the basics (Iso, Shutter Speeds...) and I could handle the camera with ease after reading the manual.

Hope I helped!

Hands down the E510.

It's not fair to compare the two unless the comparison is whether you want to go with a DSLR or a Point n Shoot.

There's many things you could compare, price, accessories, learning curve, etc...

What you can't compare are the results you "could" achieve.

If you are serious, you want to learn, you want to expand your abilities, you want to invest, then go DSLR.

I have a Nikon and an Olympus, the Olympus is my lightweight but it's limited with lens choices. My Nikon is my mainstay.

No point and shoot model will compare to a DSLR.

But if a point and shoot saves you money, saves your learning curve time, provides you in the sense of having a camera that better suits your casual use or a limited amount of involvement...by all means go that route.

Are you wanting to be a serious amateur? Then go DSLR

Are you wanting great pictures and more casual and occansional? Then go PNS
