It all depends on the camera that you get. I have a Nikon D70, and there is no internal memory to store pictures. You must have a memory card to take a picture. While there definitely are some cameras on the market today that do have some internal memory, by and large most of them will require an external memory card for any sort of practical use.

Some have both but the internal one is usually very very small (only a few pictures can fit...perhaps 4-5) so yes an external memory card is needed. I recommend 512 megs if not 1 gb!
