Does my friend have a case against me, legally and/or ethically?

We were heavily drinking one night both at my friend's house and at a bar. Once at the bar, my friend continued to buy all my drinks. She was having multiple drunk people take her digital camera, which was approx 9 months old, and take pictures of her with it. She passed it on to me as well and suddenly knocked the camera out of my hand (she says she did not knock it out of my hand). I gave it back to her and she checked it and it was working and said 'Don't worry it's ok'. Then she took it back out 5--10 minutes later to give it to another drunken friend to take a picture with and then it didn't work - she said 'the stupid battery has been causing me problems'. 2 days later she has come to me asking me to take responsiblity for her broken camera which costs $200 to fix. She will not give me the make/model of the camera, nor the information where her boyfriend bought the camera for her or when he bought it. Do I owe her anything since she knocked it out of my hand?

Neither...Its her own darn fault...A judge would laugh her out of court...

NO Way....

it was an accident.... and any friend would not ask you to pay for their camera.. after a night of drunkeness.....

it is my opinion that you are not in the wrong, legally or ethically. She was handing the camera out to drunk people, therefore the responsibility lies with her. You check the camera when it dropped and it worked, so if it didn't two days later, that can't be your problem

no, but i'm suprised you recall such detail with so much alcohol consumption!
sounds like she doesn't know how to take responsability for her actions. especially when money is involved - always a relationship killer (money).
tell her you don't believe you are responsible for the breakage.

you owe her an appology and you can ask her to give you the camera for you to get it fixed or at least looked at.. i wouldnt give her the 200 though just in case she is not being 100 percent honest with you... sounds a bit sus that she wont give you the details,
Good Luck,
Bonnie

no this would not hold up in court. being intoxicated and not taking care of her belongings is her fault. you should refuse to pay her and say that she needs to drink responsibly. the camera is the least of her problems. tell her to take you to court than. court fees will be more than the camera...and she has no evidence you broke it.

hell no, she has nothing against you legally or ethically.
bringing your camera into a roomful of drunk people while drunk yourself and expecting everything to be ok is foolish.
tell her to take the aa batteries and insert them in her choice of orifice

HELLS NO... SHE HAS NOTHING SPECIALLY IF SHE DOESNT WANT TO GIVE YOU ANY INFORMATION ON THE CAM MODEL ETC.. AND BESIDES SHE SHOULDNT TAKE AN EXPENSIVE CAM TO GO BAR HOPPIN WITH DRUNKEN FRIENDS.. NEXT TIME SHE SHOULD TAKE A DISPOSABLE CAM. IT SOUND LIKE TO ME YOUR FRIEND IS A BIT OUT OF HER LEAGUE.. DONT DRINK AND GO OUT WITH HER ANYMORE IF SHE IS GOING TO BLAME YOU FOR EVERY LITTLE THING THAT HAPPENDS, WHILE BOTH OF YOU ARE DRINKING.. BUT BACK TO THE QUESTIONS.. NO YOU DONT OWE HER ANYTHING LEGALLY OR ETHICALLY.. GOOD LUCK.

you need not. we cannot judge when it stoped working( from your hand or from her hand). other wise share the bill for 50/50

Do not give her any money. Seek leagal advice, as it does not sound right. Tell her to put it in writing with receipt of the camera, as you may find that she is taking you for a ride. She does not sound like a good friend. Plus...it is not your fault so why should you pay for it?

It all depends but if she takes you to court, she will have to provide evidence of how much the the camera cost and how much it cost to repair as well as the make and model of the camera.

NO, NOPE, NEVER. The first thing I will say is NO, you are NOT responsible. BUT if you want to be a really really nice person/friend then you might just consider helping out. BUT just from what you said NO, she was drunk and STUPID. (SHOW HER this answer) BUT also let me say this, $200.00 to fix, what kind of camera was/is this? I just bought a NEW camera, 8 mega pixels and all kinds of fancy stuff for UNDER $200.00. More specifically the camera cost me $198.00. If this camera was that expensive of a camera the DRUNK didn't need to have the camera in a BAR with her for NO reason. Sorry wish you the best.

if she was handing that camera out all night to others you are no more responsible than anyone else. She has no idea when it could have been broke,n.
