well I'll try to take a picture and it says "card locked" and i took the batteries out and switched them around, and then when i tried to take the picture, it just turned off. And I have new batteries in there. My main question, what does "card locked" mean? take your card out of your camera. look on the side, and there should be a little slidey thing on the side. [i have an SD memory card, and it is yellow and on the left side.] i should say "LOCK" on it. push it the opposite way it is now and your card should work.
im not sure why they have it though. All memory cards except Compact Flash have a lock switch in them.
The purpose of the lock switch is simple. If you've filled your card locking it will protect your pictures since, as you've discovered, the camera won't use a locked card so you can't accidentally erase them later on.
Now if you only have one card and you faithfully download the images regularly that seems like a dumb thing to have. However, if you have several cards and you're on a trip where you can't download the images, the lock becomes really important since that way you can't accidentally use a card you've already filled up.
Whenever I've been on a long trip that's how I've often determined whether a card was empty and available for use, by looking at the lock switch.
I should add that this applies to the computer too. You can read a locked card through a card reader on the computer and you can download the pictures, but you can't erase them until you unlock the card. So it can protect you that way too.
In any case, to solve your current problem all you have to do is slide the little switch in the opposite direction and your card will work fine.
I hope that helps a little. |
