i want at least 3x optical zoom (digital doesn't matter),
5 megapixels or above, compact size, fairly large view screen, and very quick shutter response (when i push the button, it takes the pic instantly, no waiting for focus or whatever). Rechargeable batteries would be a plus. Using compact flash cards would be nice, too...brand suggestions, also welcome...thanks;) A guy asked about a Canon SD750 on here a few minutes ago and I looked into it. Its a 7mp, very slim, 3x optical zoom, 3" LCD screen!, but it looks like its $300. Canon and Nikon are probably the top dogs. I have a 6.1mp z612-IS Kodak (sorta bulky DSLR-like body) with 12x optical zoom that takes great pictures, but a lot of people think kodak sucks. Quite a few of their new cameras are pretty nice. I like canon, nikon, kodak, panasonic.
http://www.flickr.com/ has a thing called "camera finder" and it shows you pictures taken with any camera you could think of and info on it. here: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/ just select a brand, then a model and let your eyes be the judge.

Just some examples of nice, slim cameras with great picture quality. There are hundreds more on there to see. Nearly all cameras for sale today meet your requirements. All except the 'no shutter lag'. All compact digicams use the same 'contrast detection' autofocus system, which seems to take about 0.2-0.3 sec on the best cameras, and 0.5-1.0sec on the worst. You can speed up the shutter lag by pre-focussing (pushing shutter half-way down).
You'll need to read the reviews to find which cameras are faster. My Fuji F31 is very quick. Canon's are notoriously slow- but accurate. Casios and Sonys generally do pretty well- but each camera is different. |
