After I insert the memory card on my digital camera I don't see anything unless I take the the card out. why?

It's my first digital camera and when I insert the memory card and wait for click, I then close it along with batteries and I don't see any picture, but when I take the card out, then the camera starts working again, What can I be doing wrong? Do I remove the card or do I have to leave the card inside? I first thought the memory card was defective but I purchased another card and the same thing happens, I know that I am doing something wrong because both card cannot be damaged. I will appreciate your answer to resolve this headache that I am getting. I have spent hours trying to figure this out, but I cannot come to any conclusions, unless I am not suppose to leave the card inside, but then what would be the sense of purchasing a card? I"m really a dummy at this so if you want you can chuckle a little. Thank you

My guess is that you're in the "view picture" mode and since there are no pictures on the card, it shows you a blank screen. Try one of the photo modes.
