I have a trail camera made by Moultrie, have horrible battery life. Do the rechargeable 6volt batteries work?

I have a trail camera made by Moultrie, it has horrible battery life, when I say horrible, I mean 5 days tops. Do the rechargeable 6-volt batteries with the solar panel work well? Are they worth worth the money? The model camera I have is the Cabellas 4.1 Outfitter Cam Digital Scouting Camera by Moultrie.

Thanks

Joe

I have 6 of these exact cameras. I use rechargeables in all of them (this will save you big bucks in the long run) but when I hook up a solar panel it does not seem to help (if anything I would say it drains it faster, and yes I have the polarity correct) I charge the batteries at home and swap them up when I can. There are a few things that might be the problem. One is old batteries, after a while the rechargeables just don't hold a charge and you need to replace them. Two if you have the camera set to video it sucks alot of power from the battery, so try switching to still photos. Three if you are getting alot of night time shots the flash will drain the battery, try to reduce the time between photos. Last but not least I believe that some cameras are just not as good as others, I have a few that will last for a month and take 500 pictures and I have others that will die in a few days with less than 50 pictures. I am not sure if moisture in the area affects the life or not but my camera in the swampy area always dies first. Also you will get less battery life in the winter time when it is cold. I know I didn't really answer your question but at least you have some thoughts based on experience.

I have never used a trail camera. To expensive for my poor self. But I can tell you the re-chargeable 6 volt batteries, do work wonders. I have 2 on my feeders with the solar panel. Which have been going strong for 2 years now. Into the third season. No signs of de-grade.

Thanks

Yes, they work very well in open, sunny areas from what I was told. I use a gel-cell rechargeable and it will last quite awhile. You can also use a car battery if you're somewhat handy with wiring & electronics for optimum battery life. I saw that set-up on a hunting show on ESPN last weekend. Might try that. My cam sits on the edge of the hardwoods and gets very little sun exposure or I would've gone the solar route myself.

I have a 2.0MP moultrie camera, about the same battery life. Right now I'm trying a rechargeable 6V(external) that is made by Stealth Cam. I did have to drill a hole in the bottom of the camera for the new connector. I just put it out yesterday, if I don't get more than a couple weeks out of it I may just sell the moultries and buy stealth cams- my dad has 3 3.0MP stealth cams that he bought before I got my moultries and his are all still working on the original batteries, where I have had to put in about 3 new batteries a piece in the moultry with no big difference in the number of pictures taken. The only thing I don't care for with the stealth cam is the camera setup, the menu isn't as neat as the moultrie.
Update, I have had the rechargeables in for about 3 days now and the cameras still report full battery charge. I did get them cheaper than what Stealthcam has them listed for($59). If you do an internet search you can find them for $39. Then all you need is a type M power connector to solder in to the moultrie wiring

yes they work quite well
