i want to buy a digital camera but know nothing about them. i want one that holds a lot of pictures and has a long battery life, and has zoom. i dont know anything about 'mega pixels' or anything either. can anyone recommend a good one? also, what is a good brand? Well, allow me to run through the basics with you.
Most cameras dont have memory to store pictures, you have to buy it additional as a memory Card. most are called SD card. they very from sizes.
Zoom is a little too broad, there are t2 types of zoom, digital, and optical. Digital zoom is where a computer zooms in and the pictures will turn out really fuzzy or unfocused, optical zoom is when it adjusts a magnifier to where it zooms in, those images come out crystal clear. (optical zoom doesnt go nearly as high as digital does)
megapixles is how many pixels each picture takes up, the more MP you have the bigger your picture will turn out.
I am guessing you just want a camera for optimal usage, like friends, family and maybe a little pets and scenery here and there? if so i would highly reccumend this camera:

it is 230, but it is really, really nice for the price. it also has a 3x optical zoom, which is actually pretty good considering the small size of the camera.
CASIO is a trusted brand for digital cameras, and it comes in 2 different colors. I have had mine for a year and a half and have experienced absolutely no problems.

keep in mind that im just showing you a cheaper priced camera, im not showing you the top of the line, just a really, really good basic or beginner camera. It is also a very small, sleek, and compact camera, it will fit in your pocket! Yes I can, the Canon Powershot S3 IS. It is an awesome 6 Mp digital camera with 12X optical zoom and optical image stabalization for around $400. It has tons of features but if you leave it on automatic you can just point and shoot.
It also has digital zoom, but digital zoom doesn't mean anything because you loose picture quality.
This camera also takes video and you can get plenty of memory for it and uses rechargeable AA batteries which is nice.
It also is a breeze to download the pictures to your computer with the software that comes with it.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro... Sony, Minolta & Pentax are all good brands. I never heard any
one complainning about digital cameras with exception to
short battery life. They all have that problem. You can buy extra
batteries and a recharger kit for most digi cameras. Dont buy a used one
seems they are always missing something important.
New ones come with everything you need, including explicit
instructions for loading on your computer. Try an electronics
store with a salesperson to go over them with you. Some are
very pricey. You didn't specify your budget or your photographic interests, which leads me to believe that you are new at digital photography. Please forgive me making the assumption that you are looking for an entry level camera if this incorrect.
Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A640 appears quite similar and shares the "600" series numbering, so I guess it's just another upgraded version of the now-classic A620. It looks pretty much the same except for being a 10 MP camera. The continuous drive is a little slower, but the files are larger, so that's no surprise. I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.
The A620 was rated about twice as good as any as far a battery life. I hope the A630 and A640 are just as good. Use Energizer e2 LITHIUM batteries and you will be happy with battery life.
With this camera, you will find the memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera.

If you want to trim the budget a little, the Canon Powershot A430, A530 or A540, are all great choices. You will need a decent memory card, though. I'd say get at least 512 MB.
