No, an AC adapter kit is usually so you can power the camera from the mains electricity, instead of relying on the battery...which is perfect if your battery is low, or you wish to power your camera for a long time.
I'm not sure about generic AC adapter kits...you would really have to make sure the adapter is 100% compatible or you could damage your camera. That's why I would prefer to stick to the name brand. I always prefer to charge my camera batteries (assuming they are removeable AA/AAA and not an internal battery) outside of the camera in a separate dedicated wall plug charger.
