I would like some help with picking rechargeable batteries for my digital camera. I can't choose between Rayovac Hybrids or Energizer rechargeables (both double AAs). The Energizer ones have a higher mAh (2500 vs. 2100 for the rayovac ones), but the Rayovac ones say that one of their hybrids lasts as long as 1200 alkaline batteries (but I'm not sure if that means over the course of it's life or through one charge). I DON'T care about how long the charge is retained in each battery (the hybrids talk about how they hold 80% of the charge over 6 months, which isn't important really for my uses)... I really only need them for 3 months. Has anyone used both of these batteries... or could someone give me some advice as to which to get? I want to be able to be able to take only a set or 2 (my camera uses 2 AAs) every day. Someone please help! (sorry about the extended details) I don't quite understand why the other poster is telling you to get rechargeable lithium batteries since there aren't any rechargeable AA lithiums out there!
In brief, your best choice for the conditions you describe are the Energizer rechargeables.
Rayovac hybrids are a special kind of NiMH battery, designed to hold their life much longer after being charged. This is great for situations where you might not be able to charge a battery, for example on a vacation where bringing a charger along would be an inconvenience. You could charge the batteries before leaving and still be sure they held their charge before using them a month later.
If you can charge your batteries easily, then this feature is of no use to you, and you should select the batteries with the highest milliamp-hour (mAh) rating. The mAh rating is essentially the measure of how much power is stored by the battery, like knowing how many gallons your gas tank holds.
The Energizer 2500 has a bigger "gas tank", which means it will last longer in a device than batteries with a 2100 mAh rating. Note that manufacturers are optimistic about their ratings, but Energizers are well-regarded as good performers.
Just make sure to charge your batteries before use; a decent charger is just as important as getting the right batteries.
Also, when you say you only need the batteries for 3 months, you need to understand that during those 3 months, you'll need to recharge your batteries. They won't last 3 months on one charge if you're not using the camera all the time, because batteries self-discharge. They are both NiMH batteries, so the "Hybrids" title is just marketing.
Choose the ones with the highest mA-h batteries.
In the future to get the most out of your camera, next time you buy one, get a camera that uses Li-ion batteries. They are the state of the art rechargeable when it comes to digital cameras. there are better brands out there.
