Will digital cameras recharge rechargable lithium batteries (AA) or do you need a battery charger?

Yes...it will charge the rechargeable AA sized cells, provided you can establish the connection. The size of the battery is only related to the capacity it can hold, and hence you might have to charge some longer time. It is preferable to still opt for a standard battery charger which takes 10-12 hours to charge, since you will have slightly longer battery life, and more recharging cycles, as compared to fast charging adopted by digital cameras. A word of caution - Make sure that teh AA sized battery's voltage level is same as that of teh original battery inside your digicam.
I hope I have helped you. Thanks!!

In my experience you need a charger.

As far as I know you need a charger

As far as I know, I have not come across any that charges its own battery
