Notebook battery and IPOD Shuffle battery safe for flight?

Hi all,
I have to leave town tomorrow and I will be going via air. The last time I went, I took my Digital Camera w/batteries in it, and the camera was damaged. However, this time, I have to take my laptop and an IPOD Shuffle with me. Are these items safe for an 8 hour flight? If not, are there any precautions I should take before boarding the flight?

Usually it should be alright to bring them onto the plane. I've tried listening to my iPod (3rd gen) in-flight and nothing happened to it. I've never tried switching on my Asus laptop but I have it in my backpack and was kept in the top cabin. There's no problem apparently.

If you are really afraid that something happened to them, I suggest you remove the battery from your laptop.
