thank you for your help

YES you can do this with a firewire connection or you can bye a card to do this job but its up to the connection on your camcorder has it got a DV IN/OUT? ALSO Download the user manual which should cover all these things as av just done as am about to attempt the same type of thing but it turns into one thing needs another and another needs

go to www.download.com you will get free software there

maybe you not need special card

you got USB ??

If you have a firewire connection and the correct siftware this shouldn't be a problem.

Your video card (capture card) will have to be up to date though.

I would guess you need a TV tuner card if the camera has an analog connection, I don't know what you would need for digital.

If you know someone who owns a DVD recorder you could try connecting the camera to that, recording to DVD and then putting the DVD in your computer and copying the files from the DVD to your PC which would save you having to buy a TV Tuner/Video Capture card.

you need video capture software. if your camera connects via firewire (and your computer has a firewire port) you can purchase the software (like roxio or nero) and import the dv footage. roxio and nero are under $100. there are many other programs that can import dv footage as well. imovie, premiere, final cut pro, etc.
if your camera connects via rca jacks (red, white, and yellow cables) then you need a video capture device. it's a small box with rca connectors. i've seen them as low as $30. check outpost.com. they have quite a selection. you just plug the camera into the box and the box into the computer via fire wire or usb 2.0. video capture devices usually work with all the above mention software.
