How can I increase my depth of field.?

I am using a digital still camera for stop motion animation. I have not got manual focus, see example.

How do I increase my depth of field using exposure. It is something to do with longer exposure times or larger aperture.

There are two ways that you can increase your depth of field. These can be used independently or together depending upon the effect you want.

Firstly, if you have a zoom lens on your camera, use the shorter focal lengths (wide angle). Be careful that this does not distort any close-up images, however.

Secondly, stop down as much as you can (smallest aperture). This will increase your exposure times but for the kind of work you are doing, this is no big deal because digital cameras do not suffer greatly from colour casts as a result of long exposures. In any event, you can always add additional lighting with a desk lamp.

Exposure time has nothing to do with depth of field, it works in inverse with aperture size.

The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field. The larger the aperture, the smaller the dpeth of field.

Best to you.

A smaller aperture will give you greater depth of field.

Exposure time is only related to that because you'll need longer shutter speeds to get the same amount of light into the camera with smaller apertures, unless you increase the camera's light sensitivity by switching it to a higher ISO setting.

Longer exposure times = smaller aperture. A smaller aperture is what you want for more depth of field. Note that a larger number means a smaller aperture setting -- the number and the size of the aperture are inversely related.

The other setting that matters is zoom, if your camera has a zoom lens. Wider is better.

Dig Further.

Us a SMALLER aperture (a larger number, like f/16 or f/22) increases the depth of field, use a 50mm lens (not a tele- lens!), or shorter focal length lens, like a 28mm lens, at a smaller aperture and use a tripod! This will increase the exposure time (a longer shutter speed), and any minor camera movement will cause blur.

Here's a short video clip that will explain it further:

Quite simply. Remember to use the smallest aperture you can.
i.e. f8 rather than f.5.6, or f16 rather than f.11;
The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field.
Consider though; less depth of field helps to seperate your subject from the background (distractions). Very useful sometimes.

Simply reduce your apiture size : ) obviously you will need to compensate with the length of exposure too. Hope you takle it.
